HELEN HELMEY
The late Helen Helmey, known as “H” by friends and family, was committed to the Wayland
community. A gift from Helmey’s estate is continuing to give back to Wayland in the form of a
bequest to the Wayland Union Schools Education Foundation.
Helmey, who died March 5, 2008, was the wife of former Wayland Globe publisher and editor,
the late Irvin Helmey. The Helmeys married in 1946 and “H” learned the newspaper business
from her husband. After her husband acquired the Wayland Globe, “H” managed the office while
being very active with the Republican Party at a local and state level. She served as president of the
Ladies Library Club, volunteering on behalf of Henika District Library , was a member of the Wayland
VFW Ladies Auxiliary, an honorary member of the United Way of Allegan County, and a Board member
of the Wayland Union Education Foundation.
“Mrs. Helmey was a true supporter of all phases of the Wayland community” said Foundation Chairman Jackie Straub. “ We are thrilled and honored to accept this gift in her memory. “H” would be excited to know that this bequest will continue to support student and teacher innovation ,while providing opportunities for both, through Foundation grants, awards and scholarships.”
